Wrestling: Lebrija reaches milestone, wins third Braves Classic title
Chokio-Alberta freshman Ethan Lebrija hit a milestone and pinned his 25th opponent for the Morris Area / Hancock / Chokio-Alberta wrestling team at the Braves Classic on Saturday, Dec. 29, in Benson.
Lebrija was two pins away from the milestone heading into Saturday, but he also has the lowest fall percentage on the team this season at 20 percent. MAHACA head coach Kyle Rose was not optimistic that Lebrija would earn his 25th pin at the Braves Classic.
“Ethan isn’t much of a pinner compared to others, but seeing as it is only two away I feel he should get there this year. I do not think he will get his 25th on Saturday. It will be in January. I may be wrong,” Rose said in an email to the Stevens County Times on Friday, Dec. 28.
He was wrong, indeed.
Lebrija went 3-0 with two pins and a tech fall to claim the 120-pound championship and his third straight Braves Classic title.
He started the tournament with a pin over Jayden Torgeson of TMB/WWG in 1:29 then pinned Austin Eastman of Ortonville in the semifinals for his 25th career pin. In the championship, Lebrija won by tech fall (18-2 3:22) over Jake Wagner of Canby.
Canby won the tournament with 213 points followed by Tracy-Milroy-Balaton / Westwood-Walnut Grove (199.5) and Benson (159). The Tigers took fourth overall in the 10-team tournament with 148.5 points.
Lebrija was the only champion for the Tigers Saturday. He leads the team in wins this season.
Also scoring points were two runner-ups finishes, two third-place finishes, two fourth-place finishes, one fifth-place finish and one sixth-place finish.
Davin Rose fell in the championship of the 113-pound tournament to Ayden Homer of TMB/WWG by 5-3 decision for second place. He pinned Lincoln Fink of Canby in the quarterfinals and took a 6-1 decision over Jon Paul Fitzpatrick of Crosby-Ironton in the semifinals.
Dalton Rose also took runner-up in the tournament. He pinned Ethan Nachbor of Border West in 2:24 in the quarterfinals of the 145-pound tournament then pinned Adam Koosman of Benson in 36 seconds to advance to the championship where he lost by 11-6 decision to Anthony Axford of TMB/WWG.
Caden Rose at 106 and Ben Travis at 138 both took third place. Tristan Raths at 182 and Matt McNeill at 195 both placed fourth.
Davin and Dalton Rose are right behind Lebrija in wins at 16 and 15 wins, respectively. McNeill is sporting a 100-percent fall percentage through the 2018 portion of the season. The senior is 10-7 overall with 10 pins on the year.
The Tigers do not open the 2019 portion of the season until Friday, Jan. 11 where they will compete in a triangular against ACGC and Benson, in Grove City.
