Women’s Track & Field Leaps to the Top on Day 1 of UMAC Championships

The Cougars head into the final day of competition with a 24-point lead on the field.
MORRIS, Minn.– The University of Minnesota Morris women’s track & field team has established a healthy lead on the rest of the field after one day of action at the 2022 UMAC Outdoor Championships. The Cougars racked up 95 points as a team on Friday and hold a 24-point lead on a pair of teams tied for second place in the seven-team field.

Trailing behind the Cougars with 71 points after one day are the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Martin Luther College. Bethany Lutheran College is in fourth place with 57 points. After that, there is a steep drop-off until you get to Crown College in fifth with 21 points, the University of Northwestern in sixth with 11 points, and North Central University in seventh place with five points.

Minnesota Morris had three event victories on Friday. In the one winning track event, the 4 x 800 Meter Relay team of Kaitlyn Ladwig, McKenna Langerud, Ilsa Hoaglund, and Briahna Hensel won comfortably with a time of 10:20.26. In throwing events, the Cougars received title-winning tosses of 146-9 (44.74 meters) from Hailey Gill in the hammer throw and 117-9 (35.89 meters) from McKenzie Newton in the javelin.

The Cougars also had a number of other scorers in those two throwing events. In the hammer, Jenica Moes was fourth with a throw of 114-11 (35.04 meters), while Anna Briggs was fifth at 112-4 (34.23 meters), and Jennifer Steinbring placed sixth at 103-6 (31.55 meters). In the javelin, Moes was the runner-up with a distance of 117-0 (35.66 meters) and Kassidy Siedow placed seventh with a throw of 90-8 (27.65 meters).

In the other field events, Minnesota Morris had four of the top eight in the long jump. The best finish there came from Kim Peters with a leap of 15-7.00 (4.75 meters). Jenna Benson was fourth at 15-4.75 (4.69 meters), Maggie Landwer claimed sixth with a jump of 14-5 (4.39 meters), and Miriam Anderson was eighth at 13-10.50 (4.23 meters). Landwer added a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 7-10.50 (2.40 meters).

Back on the track, Minnesota Morris had a 3-4-5 finish in the 200 Meter Dash with Lydia Gross in third place (27.15), Olivia Salzwedel one spot back (27.41), and Elizabeth Frias in fifth (27.69). Two other scorers for UMN Morris were Hensel and Ladwig in the 800 Meters. Hensel finished in fifth place in 2:28.62 and Ladwig was eighth in 2:32.32. Finally, the prelims of the 100 Meter Dash took place on Friday, with the top eight qualifying for Saturday’s final. Four of those finalists will be Cougars as Salzwedel took second in 12.64 seconds, Jasmine Terry was fourth in 12.91, Gross was fifth in 12.95, and Benson was seventh in 13.44.

The final day of competition at the UMAC Outdoor Championships gets started tomorrow at 11 a.m.
