The University of Minnesota Morris men’s soccer team netted a consolation goal late in the match, but it was a case of too little, too late against a strong Bethany Lutheran College squad. The Vikings came away with a 4-1 win to stay tied for the lead atop the UMAC. The Cougars fall to 5-12-1 (5-6-1 UMAC).
A 16-0 edge in total shots in the first half for Bethany Lutheran kept Minnesota Morris pinned back in its own end and resulted in a 2-0 lead at the halftime whistle. Cameron Brookfield opened the scoring in the 25th minute and then added another in the 33rd minute.
Traffic in front of goal helped Jamie Smith net one for the Vikings soon after the restart, making it 3-0 in the 48th minute. Max Busch added a fourth for Bethany Lutheran in the 66th minute on a penalty kick.
The Cougars were able to get on the board in the 83rd minute as Matt Gearou netted his second of the season unassisted.
Lucas Harmon made 12 saves on the day in goal for UMN Morris.
Minnesota Morris returns to Cougar Field next week with matches on Friday and Saturday. First up is a 3:30 p.m. match with UW-Superior on Oct. 29.
