All eight UMAC schools on both the men’s and women’s sides will qualify for the UMAC Tournament as long as they meet the threshold for conference games played this season.
UMAC Press Release
ST. PAUL, Minn.—The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced several changes to its COVID-19 protocols for the remainder of the 2021-22 men’s and women’s basketball seasons Wednesday.
The UMAC Council of Athletics Directors approved structural changes to the 2021-22 UMAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. For each gender, all eight teams will qualify for the tournament with the tournament champion earning the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championship. Tournament quarterfinals will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22 with games hosted at the highest seed. Teams will then be reseeded for the semifinals set to take place Thursday, Feb. 24 at the highest remaining seeds. The championship games will take place Saturday, Feb. 26.
The Council affirmed current protocols in which a team must complete 75 percent of its conference contests (11 games) in order to be eligible for the UMAC regular season championship in men’s and women’s basketball. For postseason seeding, the Council amended that all eight teams will qualify for the tournament regardless of the number of contests completed. Teams that reach the 75-percent threshold will be seeded first prior to seeding remaining teams that do not complete at least 75 percent of regular season contests.
Finally, the Council waived a requirement that teams must reschedule contests within 21 days of the regularly scheduled contest.
The Council of Athletics Directors revised UMAC COVID-19 protocols due to the number of currently rescheduled UMAC contests, expected additional basketball contests that will get rescheduled due to COVID-impacts and in consideration of changing guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the NCAA Sports Science Institute (SSI).
The UMAC continues to monitor changing circumstances related to COVID-19. At this time, no adjustments to schedules or tournaments for spring sports have been made. Any further decisions for 2021-2022 made by conference governance groups will continue to be driven by available guidance from local and state health officials and are subject to change.
