The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tiger track and field teams will send 11 participants, including two relays, on to the Class A State Track and Field meet next Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, at Hamline in St. Paul. The Tigers are sending four girls in four events and seven boys, including two relays that placed in the top two at the Section 6A meet Thursday, May 30, in Fergus Falls.

After a phenomenal boys track and field season, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta head boys coach Dale Henrich was named Section 6A boys track and field Coach of the Year, announced at the section meet Thursday.

“Great honor and well deserved for Dale,” MACA girls coach, and athletic director, Mark Ekren said.

Advancing to state for the Tiger girls are Maddie Carrington, Olivia Lebrija, Kaylie Raths and Lexi Pew.

Carrington was a double section champion and enters state for her fourth time. She won the 800-meter run in 2:21.86, nearly a second better than runner-up finisher from Ottertail Central, and the 1600-meter run in 5:18.81, over five seconds better than second-place finisher from Perham. This will be her third straight appearance in the 1600-meter run and fourth non-consecutive time at state in the 800-meter run. Carrington took ninth at state in the 1600 last season.

Lebrija and Raths were a one-two punch in the 100-meter hurdles and will be headed to state for the first time. Lebrija clocked a 16.6 to win the event while teammate Raths finished in 16.72 for second place.

Pew tied with Minnewaska’s Ellie Danielson for first-place in the high jump. Both qualified with a 5-02, which is the state standard in the event. Pew has a season best of 5-02.5 from the Tiger Invite April 16.

For the boys, Jaden Maanum is headed to state in three events. He won the 800-meter run in 2:02.44 and took second in the long jump with a personal best jump of 21-02.

Maanum was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay that had a runner-up finish. The foursome of Kenny Soderberg, Camden Arndt, Mace Yellow and Maanum finished in 3:31.31, nearly a second better than third-place Perham.

Noah Stewart was the champion of the 1600-meter run. His time of 4:29.7 was a new season best by over two seconds. The 2019 state track and field meet will be Stewart’s and Maanum’s third consecutive state track and field appearance as both were a part of the 4x800-meter relay that participated at state in 2017 and 2018.

This will be Maanum’s third straight appearance at state track and field as the junior was a part of the back-to-back 4x800-meter relays that were statebound in 2017 and 2018.

Arndt won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.42 to advance to his second straight state track meet. He finished fifth in the event at state in 2018.

The boys 4x200-meter relay of Soderberg, Yellow, Zach Hughes and Noah Thielke is also headed to state. The foursome clocked a 1:33.37 for a second place finish at sections. Third-place finishing Minnewaska was just 0.14 seconds behind them.
