Softball: Late rally eliminates Owls in playoff opener

An early lead was lost on a four-run seventh inning that resulted in the No. 5-seeded Hancock Owl softball team being eliminated from the Section 6A tournament by No. 4-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Tuesday, May  21, in Belgrade.

After a scoreless first inning, the Owls struck first with two runs in the top of the second. Tori Pahl led off the inning with a triple. She scored on a single by Morgan Kisgen two batters later. Lexi Staples, who reached via walk, was plated by a single from Alexa Meierding to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Hancock extended its lead to 4-0 in the third on a bases loaded walk from Staples, which scored Nadine Miller, and a sacrifice fly out by Kisgen, which scored Rylee Hanson.

BBE finally got on the board, responding with two runs in the bottom of the third. Hancock kept its trend going, tacking on another two runs in the fourth. With two outs, a R. Hanson triple scored Miller and a Pahl single scored Hanson to give the Owls a 6-2 lead.

Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth. Staples dropped a bunt for a hit to score Haley Mattson and give Hancock a 7-3 lead.

Trailing 7-4 heading in the bottom of the seventh, BBE rallied for four runs to win, including a two-run single to tie the game.

Pahl had a strong day at the plate for the Owls, going 4-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. R. Hanson also had a triple, going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Carlee Hanson was tagged with the loss after 6-1/3 innings in the circle.

The Owls finish the 2019 season 7-10 overall and graduate Nadine Miller and Haley Mattson off their roster.
