Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta softball suffered its first loss of the season in the championship of the Tiger Invite Saturday, April 27, in Morris. The Tigers went 2-1 on the day with their lone loss coming against the Proctor Rails, 13-0, in the title game.

Despite being shut out for the first time since the bittersweet end to last season in the playoffs against St. James, Morris/C-A coach Mary Holmberg was pleased with what she saw against the strong Rails team.

“Our loss to Proctor will only help us. They were a solid team with experienced hitters, who could slap, bunt and hit for base hits,” Holmberg said. “In the third game of the day, we lost our focus right away in the first inning and gave up six runs on bunts, errors and base hits. It was good to see other teams and face some faster pitching. This will only help us as we make our playoff drive.”

The Tigers defeated St. Cloud Apollo 11-3 in the opening round of the tournament then cruised past Valley City 7-2 in the second game of pool play to advance to the championship.

Emma Bowman went 5-for-8 on the day while Kenzie Hockel went 5-for-9 in the tournament with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in the opener against Apollo. Senior Riley Decker went 4-for-7 and five RBI on the day.

“I thought Emma Bowman made solid contact in all three games, and Kenzie Hockel added power along with Riley Decker,” Holmberg said.

Tiger pitchers Liz Dietz and Kenna Kehoe were likely sore Sunday morning after eight games last week, including six straight Thursday through Saturday.

The Tigers doubleheader at Sauk Centre Tuesday was rescheduled to May 6, so they next host Melrose for a single conference game on Thursday, May 2, in Morris. First pitch at 5 p.m. Morris/C-A then closes out the week at New London-Spicer Friday, May 3.
