Softball: Owls top Trojans for first win of 2019

An eight-run sixth inning was enough for the Hancock softball team to edge Ortonville 17-16 for its first win of the season on Tuesday, April 9, in Ortonville.

The Owls started the sixth inning with five straight hits, including a two-RBI double from Rylee Hanson. Haley Mattson and Lexi Staples also had RBI hits early in the inning. After Staples scoring on a passed ball and Alexa Meierding scored on a fielder’s choice, the Owls led 15-10. With two outs, Carlee Hanson hit a RBI triple to score Lindsey Mattson then Hanson scored on a single by Nadine Miller to give Hancock a 17-10 lead and held on to win.

Hanson, Miller and H. Mattson had three hits each.

Hanson took the win in the pitcher’s circle with a complete game. She gave up 16 runs (nine earned) on eight hits, walked 10 and struck out four.

The Owls are next scheduled to travel to Hillcrest Lutheran Tuesday, April 16, in Fergus Falls, and play Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Thursday, April 18, in Wheaton.
