Softball: Owls stroll to victory over Trojans

The Owls used the most of 15 walks en route to a 17-2 four-inning win over Ortonville Thursday, May 10 in Hancock.

Hancock jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. With two outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and plated Carlee Hanson. Katelynn Jepma got hit by a pitch to score Nadine Miller and Haley Mattson walked to scored Ashlyn Mattson. Rylee Hanson took advantage of a passed ball, scoring the Owls' fourth run of the inning. Jepma was plated after Emma Nelson walked, and Lexi Staples was hit by a pitch to score H. Mattson for the six run. Ortonville made a pitching change and recorded the final out via strikeout.

The second inning the Owl added nine runs on one hit to go up 15-0. Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Owls. Miller scored on a wild pitch to give Hancock a 7-0 lead before a walk to Haley Mattson loaded the bases again. Lindsay Mattson walked to scored Ashlyn Mattson, then Nelson singled in Rylee Hanson before Staples hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. Haley Mattson scored on the play as Nelson was forced out at second. Staples stole second then Carlee Hanson was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. A fielding error by Ortonville allowed L. Mattson and Staples to score as Miller reached first and C. Hanson advanced to third. Hancock led 12-0 after the error. Ashlyn Mattson walked to load the bases for the fourth time in the inning then R. Hanson was walked and Jepma was hit by a pitch to plate the final two runs of the inning for the Owls.

Ortonville finally got on the board in the third. Courtney Berger reached on a fielder's choice, took second on a passed ball, and advanced to third on an error. Berger scored on a RBI single by Natalie Strei. A single by Mackenzie Siedell loaded the bases, but Hancock pitcher Morgan Kisgen worked out of the jam and left them all stranded on base.

Hancock responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on two hits. Kyerra Carter led off the frame with a double. Carlee Hanson traded spots with her, hitting a double of her own to score Carter and give Hancock a 15-1 lead. Jenna Kannegiesser, who got hit by a pitch to reach, advanced to third on the play and scored on a fielder's choice. A bases loaded walk with two outs scored Miller for the 17th run.

Nadine Miller scored four times for the Owls. Emma Nelson and Carle Hanson had RBI hits in the game.

Hancock travels to Ashby for a doubleheader Friday, May 11. Hancock closes out the regular season with a doubleheader at West Central Area Monday, May 14 and hosting Brandon-Evansville for a single game Thursday, May  17 in Hancock.
