The Morris / Minnewaska girls swim and dive team placed sixth at the Section 6A True Team meet on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16, at the Regional Fitness Center in Morris. Alexandria won the seven-team invite.
“My favorite part of the whole thing, aside from the success for the kids, was the atmosphere. It was loud, and everyone was excited and cheering, the pool area was full. We haven’t had that in a while, so to have that adrenaline and cheering back at a meet was really fun,” Gator head coach Anita Nelson said.
Diving was held on Friday. The Gators had Grace Mortenson and Makarian Schott compete in an 11-dive set and finished 20th and 21st overall.
“I believe this was a first for both of them,” Nelson said of successfully diving all 11 dives. “Our section is probably one of the hardest sections for diving. We have a lot of talented divers so it is extremely competitive.”
Swimming competition was held on Saturday.
“We had a GREAT day! It was again so much fun to be back in a loud, full pool. It makes for races to be that much more fun,” Nelson said.
The Gators had five top 10 finishes led by Shannon Dougherty, who finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.52 and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.75.
The West Central Conference tournament is Friday, Oct. 29, in Montevideo.
