Football: Hancock upsets Wheaton/H-N

Hancock’s defense turned in a dominant performance and the Owls upset 9th-ranked Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 20-7 Friday, Sept. 28, in Wheaton.

The Owls defensive line provided constant backfield pressure, holding the Warriors to just 59 yards rushing, and was highlighted by Tory Schmidgall’s blindside hit on Warriors quarterback Nelson Schmidt, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Peyton Rohloff.

The Hancock offense turned that into points on Tyler Timmerman’s nine-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

Timmerman scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter, including taking a screen pass 79-yards to the house, finishing with 160 yards of total offense. Preston Rohloff was 7-16 for 124 yards and a score, Gideon Joos added 56 yards rushing.

Harrison Zeltwanger recorded two of the Owls three sacks as they move to 4-1 on the season.

Hunter Johnson had eight catches for 64 yards and Schmidt finished 16-29 for 130 yards to lead Wheaton offensively. Schmidt scored the lone touchdown in the game for the Warriors on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. Isaac Deal recorded seven solo tackles as the Warriors fall to 4-1.

The Warriors were ninth in rankings provided by the Associated Press last Wednesday, Sept. 26 and were no longer in the top 11 in the new rankings released Wednesday, Oct. 3. In the new QRF rankings released Monday, Oct. 1, the Owls moved up to No. 11 while W/H-N dropped from No. 7 to No. 14.

Verndale, Hancock’s next opponent Friday, Oct. 5, remains undefeated at 5-0 and is ranked fifth in the QRF 9-Man rankings. The Pirates are ranked third in the state in 9-Man, according to the AP rankings released Sept. 26 and Oct. 3.

The Owls kick-off with Verndale at 7 p.m., in Hancock.
