Blue skies and sun were spotted through the clouds enough Monday afternoon to dry out a very soft and damp Pomme de Terre golf course before the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta cross country opener Monday, Aug. 26, in Morris.

“For as much rain as we got, the course was in great shape,” Morris/C-A head coach Dale Henrich said of the season opener in Morris.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd won the boys meet while ROCORI had five runners in the top five for first place in the girls meet.

The Morris/C-A boys finished fifth, one point ahead of Montevideo, while the Tiger girls were runner-up with two girls in the top 10.

Noah Stewart was the lone boy in the top 10 for Morris/C-A. The senior finished in eighth overall with a time of 18:02. His season best from 2018 was 16:25.7.

For the girls, the Carrington sisters, Maddie and Meredith, finished seventh and ninth, respectively. Maddie Carrington clocked a 22:09 while younger sister Meredith finished in 22:40. Maddie Carrington's season best from 2018 was 19:49.2 set at the Section 6A meet, in New London-Spicer. Meredith Carrington's season best of 20:10.1 was also set at the 2018 Section 6A meet.

“No one gets to start where they finished last year time wise so the times will start out slower than their personal best from last year,” Henrich said. “The times should fall quickly as the runners are working hard.”

The Tigers competed at Lac qui Parle Valley Thursday, Aug. 29, in Appleton. Maddie Carrington and Meredith Carrington both placed in the top five to help the Morris/C-A girls take first place in the five-team invite. Hailey Werk was also in the top 10 for the Tigers.

On the boys side, Lac qui Parle Valley / Dawson-Boyd dominated with four runners in the top four en route to a first-place finish as a team. Morris/C-A finished fourth without its top runner in Noah Stewart. Bradley Rohloff was the first runner across for the Tigers, placing 13th with a time of 19:41.32 in his first varsity meet of 2019. Thomas Tiernan and Jared Boots were in the top 20.

With two meets under the belt, the varsity line up is not set, Henrich said.

“I feel the top seven will change a lot for the girls as the season progresses with the top 10 to 11 runners in the hunt for a varsity spot,” Henrich said. “The boys team will have less movement, but I think we will have some movement for the first half of the season.”

The Tigers next compete at Holdingford Thursday, Sept. 5.
