Baseball: Morris routs NLS in Junior Legion action
The Morris Junior American Legion baseball team routed New London-Spicer Junior Legion baseball team by a score of 5-2 Tuesday, July 9, in Spicer.
Morris scored in the first thanks to an RBI single by Tristan Raths then added three more in the third to go up 4-0. In the third, Brandon Jergenson started off the inning with a lead off walk. He scored from first on a double by Zach Bruns, who reached third on a passed ball then scored on a sacrifice fly from Will Breuer. With two outs, a bases loaded walk by Brady Backman scored Durgin Decker to give Morris the extended lead.
NLS added its two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run triple by Hayden Christopherson. Morris was able to get one of those runs back in the fifth on an error, which allowed Mason Dougherty to be plated for Morris' fifth and final run of the game.
Morris had three players record a hit and together combined for seven hits total in the game. Bruns was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Raths was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Dougherty also had two hits.
Backman took the win on the mound. He went six innings, gave up two earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four. Bruns came in for the final inning to record the save with two strikeouts.
The Morris Junior Legion baseball team is now 9-3 on the season. Morris next plays at Starbuck Friday, July 12, at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood, before participating in the Starbuck tournament Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14. Next week, Morris will play a doubleheader against ACGC Tuesday, July 16, in Morris before closing out the regular season at BOLD for a doubleheader Friday, July 19, in Olivia.
