Baseball: Morris holds off Willmar for third straight win

Morris held off Willmar’s comeback attempt late in the game to win 11-9 in junior legion baseball action Tuesday, June 18, in Willmar. With the game tied at 5-5, Morris scored six runs in the top of the seventh and held Willmar to four for the two-run win, Morris’ third straight victory.

After two scoreless innings, Morris got on the board in the third with a double by Riley Reimers and a single by Mason Dougherty. Willmar responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

After both teams went down in order in the fourth, Morris was able to take back the lead with three runs in the fifth. A Will Breuer double scored Tristan Raths and Zach Bruns then Dougherty singled in Breuer to give Morris a 5-3 lead.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when Willmar tied the game with a triple.

Morris unloaded it’s offense in the top of the seventh, going for six runs to take a hefty 11-5 lead. Ross Marty and Brady Backman had back-to-back RBI singles. Derek Giese hit a two-RBI single, which scored Backman and Jared Boots. With two outs, Bruns hit a two-RBI single, which scored Giese and Brandon Jergenson.

Willmar mounted its comeback, but fell short as Bruns recorded the final strikeout to end the game with two runners on base.

Breuer was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead Morris, who outhit Willmar 15-8 on the day.

Bruns earned the win on the mound. He went four innings, gave up six runs (three earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out five.

Morris next hosts its first annual wood bat tournament Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, in Morris. On Saturday, Morris will play Hutchinson at 11 a.m. and St. Charles at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a skills challenge. Participating teams include: Morris, Hutchinson, St. Charles, Minneota, Benson, and Mound-Westonka. The third-place game and fifth-place game will be played at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 23 with the championship game to follow at 12 p.m.
