The Morris American Legion baseball team went 3-1 to clinch a District 7 Final Four bid out of the West Central West pod this past weekend, in Morris. Morris, who was ranked No. 1 in the pod playoffs, beat Benson Friday and Wheaton Saturday to clinch a spot in the championship Sunday.

Wheaton clawed its way through the loser's bracket and into the title game on Sunday to face Morris for a second time in the tournament and beat the Morris Legion Post 29 team, forcing a second game for the title and spot in the final four. Morris used its depth at pitcher position to shut out Wheaton in game two to earn a spot in the final four.

Morris, now 8-9 overall, will open the double elimination District 7 final four, hosted at Marthaler Field on the campus of Minnewaska Area High School, against top-seeded Breckenridge at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, in Glenwood. No. 3 Kerkhoven and No. 2 Osakis play at 5 p.m. The winners play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27 while the losers play at 12 p.m.

The Hancock Legion team went 0-2 in the West pod tournament this past weekend and closed out the season 2-9 overall.

Wheaton 3, Hancock 1

Wheaton outlasted Hancock 3-1 in the West pod opener Friday, July 19, in Morris.

Matt Thielen's sacrifice bunt in the second inning scored Hunter Johnson to tie the game at 1-1 before hitting the go-ahead RBI in the sixth.

Thielen recorded the complete game win on the mound.

For Hancock, Kody Berget struck out eight over four innings while allowing an unearned run on three hits.

Tanner Pahl had the lone RBI for Hancock.

Kevin Asfeld singled in Jaret Johnson and the Morris Legion baseball team came out ahead in a 12-inning marathon game against Benson, 8-7, in the District 7 West playoffs Friday, in Morris.

Asfeld finished with three hits. Colten Scheldorf went 4-for-5 and was a home run short of the cycle.

Jordan Leuthardt picked up the win on the mound with a perfect 11th inning and two strikeouts.

Benson came out ahead of a back-and-forth battle with Hancock Saturday, July 20, in Morris.

Sam Lenarz scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh then Benson's defense held Hancock scoreless in the bottom half to secure the win.

Adam Shaw was 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs to keep Hancock within striking distance the entire game.

Peyton Rohloff was tagged with the loss, giving up the unearned run in the seven and just one hit in two innings pitched.

Wheaton's comeback fell short against Morris as Post 29 escaped with a 7-5 victory over the Bandits Saturday, July 20, to cruise to the West pod championship game.

Morris was ahead 7-2 before Wheaton began its comeback in the sixth inning.

Zach Bruns went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the second inning. Jaret Johnson and Kevin Asfeld also added two hits each. Johnson had two RBIs in the game.

Morris broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth and shutout Wheaton in the deciding second game Sunday, in Morris.

Austin Berlinger scored on a Kevin Asfeld RBI single in the fifth and Cade Fehr scored on a Joseph Kleinwolterink single in the sixth.

The win sends Morris to the District 7 final four this coming weekend, in Glenwood.
