The Morris American Legion baseball team, which finished out the season 5-8 overall, took the No. 1 seed in the West Central (District 7) West pod playoffs, which begin Friday, July 19, at Chizek Field in Morris.
Morris will play host to No. 4 Benson at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. The first game will be between No. 3 Hancock and No. 2 Wheaton at 5 p.m., at Chizek Field in Morris.
"Morris is the No. 1 seed by beating Hancock twice, and splitting with Wheaton, having the run differential as the tie-breaker. Wheaton is the No. 2 seed based off beating Hancock. Hancock is the No. 3 seed based off their .500 record, and Benson is the No. 4 seed based off their below .500 record. Ultimately, the boys have to settle it on the field this weekend," Michael Arvidson said in an email that included the West Central West pod bracket.
As the District 9 Baseball Director, Arvidson oversees the Northwest and West Central (District 7) Sub-State for Senior Legion and North out-state and Northwest (District 7) Sub-state for Junior Legion. Morris and Hancock Legion teams are both in the West Central division while the Morris Junior Legion is in the Northwest division.
For the West Central West pod tournament, the two losers will play each other at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in Morris, while the winners follow at 2:30 p.m. The championship is slated for 12 p.m. Sunday, July 21 with a second game scheduled for 2:30 p.m., if necessary.
The top team will represent the West pod in the District 7 Final Four next weekend (July 26-28).
