The University of Minnesota Morris swimming and diving program closed out the Liberal Arts Championships with a fourth-place finish Saturday, Feb. 16, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Cougars finished the meet with 344 points, two points ahead of fifth-place Nebraska Wesleyan University.
"I am very proud of this group," UMM head coach Dave Molesworth said. "At the beginning of the meet we talked about how important every point was and to see this team fight for every point and take 4th place by just two points. It was a fantastic way to end a great season."
The Cougars had a runner-up finish and a third-place finish on day one Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Day two on Thursday, Feb. 14
The quartet of Papke, Walker, Carolyn Curtis and Melssen took seventh in the 400-yard medley relay with their time of 4:21.20.
Melssen swam in the B final of the 500-yard freestyle and finished 13th overall with her time of 5:42.74.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Papke clocked in at 2:18.89 to finish seventh overall.
The 50-yard freestyle saw a pair of Cougars compete in the B final. In the event, Salzwedel took 12th (25.78) and Curtis finished 15th (25.97).
Day three on Friday, Feb. 15
In the 3-meter dive, McKenna Vininski and Taryn Longshore finished second (369.05) and third (305.65), respectively.
The Cougar 200-yard medley relay of Montana Lawrence, Sierra Walker, Carolyn Curtis and Olivia Salzwedel combined for a time of 1:57.06 to place sixth.
Caitlin Papke took seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 1:01.84.
Lawrence brought home a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 2:05.15. She also clocked in at 1:02.89 to finish ninth in the 100-yard backstroke.
In the 400-yard IM, Tatiana Walker-Rozo and Claire Naslund finished 10th (5:18.07) and 11th (5:24.58), respectively.
Curtis placed 12th in the 100-yard butterfly with her time of 1:05.86
Day four on Saturday, Feb. 16
Montana Lawrence finished 11th in the 1650-yard freestyle with her time of 20:05.42.
Freshman Olivia Salzwedel placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.90. Along with Salzwedel, Sierra Walker finished 10th (57.35) and Liz Melssen placed 11th (57.96), respectively.
Caitlin Papke recorded a time of 2:14.62 in the 200-yard backstroke to finish sixth overall.
The Cougars picked up 15 points in the 200-yard butterfly as Carolyn Curtis placed ninth (2:34.75) and Tatiana Walker-Rozo took 11th (2:44.62), respectively.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Papke, Walker, Malia Stone and Salzwedel combined for a time of 3:47.02 to finish sixth.
