The Morris Benson Area girls hockey team scored first, but the lead didn't hold up Saturday, Jan. 12, in Fairmont. The Storm falls to 3-15 on the season after a 6-3 loss to the Cardinals. It was the second meeting between the two squads this season. MBA won the first meeting 5-3 back on Dec. 15, in Benson.

In the second meeting, Taryn Picht opened the scoring early in the first period, unassisted. It was the only goal in the period as the Storm took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

“I think when we went into the locker room down 0-1 after the first period, they just kind of picked themselves up and came out and played a different game in the second and third,” Fairmont Area head coach Ashley Olson told the Fairmont Sentinel.

Fairmont came out of the intermission and recorded two goals to take its first lead of the game. Chloe Zimmel briefly tied the game at 2-2 thanks to an assist from Kortney Sanasack, but Fairmont responded quickly with a goal of its own just over 90 seconds later. The Cardinals added an insurance goal with over five minutes to play to take a 4-2 lead into the final intermission.

Fairmont extended its lead with two more goals in the third period. MBA's Karlie Bruns scored with under three minutes to play, but it was too little, too late as the Storm fell 6-3.

The Storm next close out the home season against Windom at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in Benson.
