Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta’s Lexi Pew held a block party during the Section 3AA-North playoff opener against Minnewaska in prep volleyball action Thursday, Oct. 25, at Morris Area Elementary School in Morris. She recorded six solo blocks to help MACA sweep of the Lakers.
“Lexi (Pew) played out of her mind blocking,” MACA head coach Caleb Greene said of Pew’s performance Thursday, which also included a team high eight kills. “She’s just a stud. She blocked so well. It’s not just blocking, there was one play where she was just diving everywhere for the ball… That kind of play is contagious for a team.”
The No. 7-seed Minnewaska didn’t go away quietly as MACA misfired on a few situational things early.
“We practice so hard and when those things don’t convert into a game right away, it’s frustrating,” Greene said of situational parts of Thursday’s game. “We have such a great group of girls, that’s why I want them to do well and why I wear my emotions on my sleeve… We’ve practiced so well lately, and I wanted that success I’ve been seeing in practice in a game. We beat Sauk Centre, beat Melrose, beat Alexandria. I told the girls in the huddle (during a timeout Thursday), Minnewaska has nothing to lose and we are playing not to lose instead of to win.”
The No. 2-seeded Tigers, who were down 10-5 early in the third set, pulled off the sweep to win 25-16, 25-20, 25-15.
Bailey Marty had five kills, and Kenzie Hockel and Sophie Carlsen had three each. Riley Decker and Macce Libbesmeier both had nine digs each.
The Tigers will next host No. 3-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 30, at MAES in Morris.
