I received an Amaryllis bulb for a Christmas gift and couldn’t wait to get it started. About one week after Christmas I put the bulb in the pot, poured in the soil and added water. There was already a small stalk popping out of the bulb.
It didn’t take long before that stalk was poking through the soil and searching for sunlight. I watered it weekly, set it in a place I could see every day, and could almost watch it grow. Now just three weeks later, I have a beautiful flower to enjoy in the cold, harsh winter.
We need some summer reminders in the midst of winter. Flowers in the homes during winter can really brighten the days. I recently attended a banquet and won the floral centerpiece so I have two flowers to brighten my days. Just the sight of them each day makes me feel warmer.
I think that flowers for Valentine’s Day are the perfect way to make a person feel special and also make our dreary world just a little brighter. Of course candy, balloons and cards are great too!
The floral displays don’t need to be just for a specific day or occasion. If you think someone is feeling lonely, depressed, housebound or sad for any reason, send them some flowers. Maybe someone did a favor for you or they gave you something that made your day. You will have no idea what a difference just a few stalks of flowers can make.
It is always such a downer when the groundhog sees his shadow in early February and hides out for another six weeks of winter. I don’t think I have ever seen winter be any shorter than mid-March so we always have six more weeks. I like to look on the positive side and think that we are over the halfway mark in winter and spring is only six (or more) weeks away.
The only better thing than flowers and spring forecasts in winter is the arrival of the first seed catalogs. That is a true sign that spring is just around the corner.
