Last August driving down Third Street in Morris, a car pulled out from the curb, putting a deep crease in the side of my nearly new 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid pickup.
I was devastated to see the damage, but the male driver assured me he had insurance and provided a Morris police officer and me with his insurance papers. The Morris Police then did a review of the accident which absolved me of any culpability.
However, the next day when I called his insurance company, I was told his insurance had lapsed several months ago, meaning my USAA insurance would pay to repair my pickup, as I had uninsured motorist insurance.
But, he was not off the hook, as laws are that my insurance company then goes after him personally for cost of repairs.
Well, to make a long story short, by him not having insurance, he had to pay $185 in fines, fees and surcharges to Stevens County, spend 90 days in jail, (stayed for a year) be law abiding, and pay restitution to my insurance company for over $5,000 which it paid the auto shop to repair my pickup.
The moral of the story is simple: Do not drive without liability insurance. It can be expensive.
