Baseball: Tigers hold off Dutchmen for conference victory

Holding onto a 5-4 lead after the fourth inning, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta baseball pitchers Zach Bruns and Cade Fehr held Melrose without a hit the rest of the way for a West Central Conference victory on Thursday, May 9, in Morris.

Morris/C-A started the game with three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single by Jaret Johnson, a sacrifice bunt by Colten Scheldorf and an error.

Jack Riley scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 4-0 in the second inning.

Melrose was able to get on the board with two runs on two hits in the third and tied the game at 4-4 with two more runs in the fourth.

The Tigers broke the tie after Brandon Jergenson scored after tagging up on a fly out to right field.

Bruns got the win after 6-1/3 innings of work where he had four strikeouts. Fehr was credited with the save after getting the final two outs.

On offense, Bruns was 2-for-3 with a run, an rbi and a stolen base while Riley went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and a stolen base.

The Tigers improve to 2-6 in the West Central Conference and 6-7 overall with the win. They next play host to Minnewaska Tuesday, May 14 and Montevideo Thursday, May 16. Both games start at 5 p.m., at Chizek Field in Morris.
