The Morris Area Chamber will not intend to lead or plan this event in the future. The organization is willing to help with the transition of the event to a group of individuals, a committee, or an organization that would like to step forward and offer to take on the celebration. The Chamber organization believes the transition would be the best outcome for the prolonged life of the PPD event. However, it also realizes its end may leave room for other activities to enter into Morris in the future from community groups.
In the September 28 issue of the Stevens County Times, the Morris Chamber of Commerce spelled out what they hoped would not be the end of the celebration. The Chamber took on the celebration a few years ago as an interim sponsor while a community committee could be formed or other organizations step up to become the host.
At the Chamber October meeting, the news was not promising. No group or person showed interest in taking on leadership of Prairie Pioneer Days. The group has decided to make a decision at their November meeting about the next step for the Chamber’s involvement but in all likelihood, the commitment for the Chamber to lead this event will be discontinued due to lack of community involvement.
For the last several years the Chamber has put in a great deal of time on the celebration. While the event does promote the area and serves a small portion of the chamber members, it is the belief of the Chamber that their efforts need to be focused on providing help and resources to all members.
What is needed is an organization that will lead the efforts and supports five sub-committees that work with different areas of the event. These include a parade, craft vendors, food stands, activities, and advertising. Each sub-committee is then responsible for specific aspects of the committee theme. The organization would enlist help from others in the community to serve on these sub-committees, they do not have to be from the organization.
If you or your organization is interested in leading the efforts of Prairie Pioneer Day or serving on the planning committee, please contact the Chamber at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 589-1242.
