Police chief honors actions of Morris police officer
Morris police officer Cole Reichenbacher received a merit award at the Dec. 26 Morris City Council meeting for his off duty response to help a man on Dec. 8.
Morrs Police Chief Ross Tiegs said Reichenbacker was off duty when he saw a man struggling to walk on a Morris street.
Reichenbacher checked on the man and found him face down in a parking lot, nearly unconscious, Tiegs said.
Reichenbacher provided first aid to the man and called an ambulance, Tiegs said. Later, the man told law enforcement that Reichenbacher likely saved his life, Tiegs said. The low overnight temperature on Dec. 8 was 4 degrees, Tiegs said.
In a Dec. 27 interview, Tiegs said Reichenbacher's actions not only speak well for him for the entire department.
"I think it's indicative of the type of people we try to hire in the department," Tiegs said. "Even though they are not on duty...(officers are geared to help). People care about the community."
Reichenbacher has been on the police department for about 5 ½ months, Tiegs said.
