2 Gophers wrestlers not charged, released from jail
MINNEAPOLIS — Two University of Minnesota wrestlers were released from custody Tuesday, June 18 without being charged by Hennepin County authorities.
Gable Steveson and his teammate Dylan Martinez, were arrested Saturday on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct. Prosecutors had to charge Steveson and Martinez by noon Tuesday. They have been released from custody.
The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors will work with the Minneapolis Police Department to review evidence over the next 90 days, according to Hennepin County authorities.
Steveson is one of the nation’s top heavyweights and an aspiring Olympian. He placed third at this year’s NCAA championships. He arrived at the U as one of the most highly heralded recruits in program history. Previously, he was a four-time Minnesota high school champion at Apple Valley with a career record of 210-3.
Martinez, who did not wrestle last season, was listed as a redshirt sophomore. Martinez wrestled for Fresno (Calif.) City College before enrolling at the U.
The two were suspended from all team activities, according to a statement Sunday from the U’s athletic department.
