There are people who can take an old barn and create a beautiful home. There are also people who make unique apartments out of warehouses or sheds. Just imagine what someone could do with a large, stone block, old bus garage. Add in the view of a lake and lots of wildlife and it could be a perfect situation. This property is now available to purchase for interested parties.
The former Morris School bus garage was the subject of a great deal of debate last year. The cause for the debate was when the school asked to have the property rezoned from residential to commercial. They felt it would be easier to sell it as a commercial property. That application was eventually denied.
The large cement block building is 60’x100’ and was built in 1940 by Coca- Cola. Since then it was used by several companies and eventually deeded to the Morris School district to be used as a bus garage. The school district added the steel shed in the 80s which is 60’x115’. During that time, the area surrounding it was zoned residential and the bus garage was allowed to continue in its non-residential status.
Last year the Morris Area School District completed a new bus garage near the school and decided to sell it. When they set out to sell it, they learned that it could only be sold for residential purposes.
There are a few other uses if a prospective buyer wishes to apply for a conditional use permit. This could include a church, private school, dance school, daycare center, greenhouse, cemetery, hospital or rest home, grocery store or veterinary clinic for small animals, among other things. It can not be purchased for storage only.
The school district has listed the property with Kelly Frank at Prairie Real Estate. The property is listed for $50,000. The plan is to accept formal offers for two weeks and then review the offers on April 12. Their goal is to give everyone an opportunity since they have been getting several inquiries.
The property, located on Fifth Street, not only has the two large buildings and big parking lot but also several feet of lakefront on Lake Crystal. Any questions can be directed to Frank at her office or call 320-815-5089. For more information go to www.wegetrealestate.com.
