Bao Phi's 2018 Caldecott Honor Book "A Different Pond" begins with the words:

Dad wakes me quietly so Mom can keep sleeping. It will be hours before the sun comes up. In the kitchen the bare bulb is burning. Dad has been up for a while, making sandwiches and packing the car. "Can I help?" I ask. "Sure," my dad whispers and hands me the tackle box. The streetlights look brighter and the roads aren't so busy before the sun comes up. Dad turns on the heater and tells me stories.

As you read Bao Phi's story you are likely pairing images with the words. The drawings that accompany the prose, by illustrator Thi Bui, deliver a powerful glimpse into the life of a boy and his father on their way to catch fish for food, and not recreation, in the dark early morning hours of their day.

Bao Phi is a multiple-time Minnesota Grand Slam poetry champ and National Poetry finalist and author of the poetry collections "S'ng I Sing" and "Thousand Star Hotel." "A Different Pond" is Phi's first children's book that tells the semi-autobiographical story of fishing with his father at a small pond in Minneapolis. Phi's father tells him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam. This story shares the relationship between father and son, and between cultures, old and new.
