The city of Morris opened its first dog park Tuesday at Pomme de Terre Park.

Mayor Sheldon Giese cut the leash to signal the official opening of the park Tuesday evening. The 200-by 175-foot park has two fenced-in areas - one for large dogs and another for small dogs. The dog park is across from the main portion of Pomme de Terre Park.

Dog owners and community members attended Tuesday’s ceremony along with a variety of dogs. In addition to the leash-cutting, the event included a fun run, face-painting, pet portraits, a Prettiest Pooch contest, and a meal.

Marie Hansen was the main organizer for the dog park. Hanson is a member of the Morris Park Board as well as the Morris Women of Today. She thanked the City of Morris, community businesses, other volunteer groups, and the many donors who supported the Women of Today in their fundraising efforts over the last two years.
