Someplace Safe Stevens held its fifth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: Men's March to End Rape, Sexual Assault, and Gender Violence Tuesday in Morris. This year’s event was partnered with the Morris Feminists and M.O.M. (Men of Morris). April is recognized across the country as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Walk A Mile in Her Shoes® literally asks men to walk for one mile in a pair of women’s shoes, while raising awareness and funds to help provide services and support to victims and survivors of violence in our area.
The Morris Area FFA Chapter held its annual spring banquet and awards program Monday. The following awards were presented. The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls’ basketball team recorded 17 wins during the 2012-2013 season. During the previous two seasons, the Tigers had a combined 17 wins. Of the Tigers’ 10 losses this season, a couple of them were very close, including the loss to Milbank with a last-second basket. After last season, coach Dale Henrich said his team wanted to know how they could improve. “I gave them an opportunity to get better,” he said.
Red Carpet Romance was the theme of Prom 2013 held Saturday, April 6 at Morris Area High School. Nearly 70 couples attended the Grand March.
The Morris Benson Area boys’ hockey team had a slow start to the season, but turned things around in 2013 to finish 17-10 overall. After losing the first three games of the season, and taking a 3-6 record into the new year, the Storm went on to win 13 of the next 16 regular-season match ups. Two of those losses, by final scores of 5-2 and 5-4, were to Marshall, a team that advanced to the state tournament. The wins included a 4-2 victory over Luverne, a team that shut out the Storm in mid-December.
MORRIS -- On Tuesday, March 19 the Minnesota National Guard 55th Civil Support Team trained employees of West Central Environmental Consultants on procedures for handling unidentified dangerous chemicals. Stevens County emergency management personnel, along with the Stevens County Sheriff’s Department, members of local fire departments, and the Stevens County Ambulance Service also participated in a scenario in which deputies became ill during the process of issuing a search warrant.
Morris Area High School’s 2013 Triple ‘A’ nominees were recognized at a recent girls’ basketball game. Seniors Katie Holzheimer and Tom Holland have been chosen to represent Morris Area in the program sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. Morris Area advances in one-act play competition with a second-place award at the Sub-section 5A Contest Saturday. Under the direction of Michelle Johnson, the Morris Area cast and crew advance to perform "4 A.M." at the Section 5A Competition Saturday at Sauk Centre.
The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team picked up four all-conference wrestlers and one honorable mention at the West Central Conference Individual Tournament on Saturday held at Minnewaska Area High School. Travis Ostby, Connor Metzger, and Joel Harrison all finished second, while Evan Nelson finished third and Dillan Johnson finished fourth. The top three wrestlers earn all-conference status. Fourth-place finishers are honorable mention.
