The Morris Eagles amateur baseball team won two of three weekend games to even their record at 9-9. The Eagles lost 7-6 to Fergus Falls in extra innings on Saturday, but rebounded to defeat the Minneapolis Angels 4-1 later that day. On Sunday, the Eagles won 8-4 at Rosen, despite delays that caused them to show up just 10 minutes before game time. After starting the season 1-5, the Eagles have won eight of their last 12 games.

By Tammy Swift I think I have mange. I've decided this after developing a rash that stumped even the doctor. My dog scratches a lot. And, most importantly, I learned from the Internet that the mites for sarcoptic mange can transfer to human skin. Before you develop a sympathy itch, let me provide some background. At different times in my life, I have believed I had: Diphtheria. Rat-bite fever. Elephantitis of the thighs. As you've probably guessed, I am a hypochondriac. And the Web is a mighty dangerous tool in a hypochondriac's hands.

Margaret Kuchenreuther felt it was time to return her shoreline on Lake Crystal to something as close as possible to its native state. And she found a program through which the State of Minnesota will pay the lion's share of the cost to do so. Kuchenreuther and more than a dozen volunteers spent Thursday and Friday planting about 50 varieties of shrubs and other plant life native to Minnesota in and near the 100-foot shoreline. Through the Department of Natural Resources' Shoreline Habitat Restoration Grant Program, the DNR is paying about 75 percent of the cost. "It's a way to do my littl

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is testing a new program to alleviate tailgating that uses so-called "distance dots." The program is being tested on a short stretch of highway in Wright County, near Buffalo. MnDOT has painted large dots on the roadway and signs tell motorists that they should see two dots between themselves and the vehicle ahead or they're snuggling up a little to closely to the back bumper to brake safely. If the year-long program proves effective in reducing crashes, it will be used in other areas, MnDOT says. The program recalls the driver education dictum of
The New Wine group from Morris toured the Mississippi Gulf coast and viewed damage caused by Hurricane Katrina on Thursday, June 22. The group made a stop at Long Beach, Miss., and took an hour-long ferry ride to Ship Island and spent some time relaxing on the beach. They'll need the respite. The youths will be forming work groups in the next few day and helping to "muck" houses damaged by the storm and also will perform other volunteer work in the area.
The other day I drove past my old neighborhood and saw plastic bags scattered throughout the tree. It reminded me to write an article on the value of bagging your apples to protect them from the apple maggot fly. This fly will start emerging from the ground around July 1 and will continue the rest of the summer. It is one reason that it is so frustrating in spraying for this insect because of the long season emergence. The adult fly usually emerges from the soil after at least a half inch of rain.
