The Morris Eagles amateur baseball team scored a ninth-inning run to defeat the Madison Mallards 4-3 Saturday in a Land O' Ducks League game in Madison. Ross Haugen scored the winning run on Matt Carrington's bouncer to shortstop, and starter Jeff Wold set the Mallards down in the bottom of the inning to preserve the Eagles' fourth-straight victory. The Eagles are 11-9 overall and have won eight of their last 10 games. They are 9-3 since June 7 after beginning the season by losing their first four games and slumping to a 2-6 start. The Eagles play Wheaton on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Morris Area High School Principal George Morrow has resigned. Morrow, who was MAHS Principal for eight years, said Monday that his resignation was effective June 30. The Morris Area School Board is scheduled to meet at noon Thursday to accept Morrow's resignation. In budget-cutting moves earlier this year, the school board voted to reduce Morrow to a half-time position for the 2006-2007 school year.
It has been a hectic week, with summer officially here. Even though the days have been getting longer there just never seems to be enough hours to get everything accomplished. The next thing you know the summer has flown by and I forgot to take time to enjoy it. I always promise my self, like a New Year's resolution, to take time to fish, golf and enjoy the outdoors while summer is here. I guess I should redefine my enjoyments and list gardening as my favorite summer time activity.
Three winners of David F. Day Memorial Scholarship funds have been announced. The scholarships are named in honor of Morris native David Day, who died in Iraq last year while serving with the Morris National Guard. Funds for the $1,000 scholarships were raised through last year's David F. Day Memorial Scholarship Fishing Tournament at Lake Minnewaska. The second-annual fishing tournament is Saturday, July 22. The scholarship winners must be in their final year in a law enforcement education program. They are: Matt Flogstad of Donnelly.
Minnesota Attorney General candidate Matt Entenza called the potential theft of military veterans identities "the Hurricane Katrina of ID theft," and vowed a plan to combat it. The Democratic candidate outlined a four-part legislative initiative to protect the identity of veterans, and he touched on several other issues, such as the proposed Big Stone II power plant and Stevens County's jail discussions, during a brief fly-in stop in Morris on Wednesday. By Sue Dieter Sun Tribune An 18-year-old Glenwood man who had been reported missing early this past week returned home safely on Thursday. However, the parents of a University of Minnesota, Morris student from Maryland are still waiting for any news about their son, almost two years after he disappeared in northern Minnesota. Nathaniel Williams left Morris September 28, 2004 for two-week fishing trip. He was traveling alone and told his roommates that he would be gone until October 10. He did not return as scheduled and his vehicle was found in Lake County, north of Two Harbors.
The Senate Committee on Appropriations has approved his request for more than $6 million in funding for key agricultural and research initiatives in Minnesota. The bill pushed by Minnesota Sen. Mark Dayton also included provisions, cosponsored by Dayton, to provide emergency disaster assistance for farmers nationwide who suffered losses in 2005. The disaster assistance package includes a Dayton provision to help farmers recover from herd losses due to bovine tuberculosis.

A group working to explore the reuse of the former Morris Area Elementary School said progress was being make, that prospects for the property appear good, and it urged patience by the City of Morris as their efforts continue. Members of the Elementary School Reuse Action Team briefed the City Council about its work at Tuesday's council meeting. The group is charged with designing a plan for potential uses for the almost 18-acre school parcel. The city purchased the land and buildings from the Morris Area School District last year, with city officials stating they wanted control over the la
15 Years Ago June 18, 1991 Sun There was more than the heat of the day warming the UMM PE Center Friday afternoon. According to UMM Chancellor David Johnson in his welcome to the 28th commencement ceremonies, there was also the "warmth of pride". From 61 graduates in the first class in 1964 to the over 400 in the Class of 1991, there are now over 7000 alumni of UMM. Johnson noted that this was the largest graduating class in the history of the campus. Auxiliary officers to Walter Tripp Post No. 29, American Legion, were recently installed at the clubrooms.
