Having just celebrated the Fourth of July, Independence Day, we were again reminded of the freedom we all share. America's history resounds with the heroic stories, the mystique, and some myths of our founding fathers in behalf of freedom. But freedom is an elusive word, with different meanings for different people. Thomas Jefferson, architect of the Declaration of Independence, kept household slaves. One person's freedom often meant another person's bondage. Freedom became license. This reminds us that there is another ingredient in our freedom, essential to its maintenance and survival.
Each year over a thousand people get excited about the annual horticulture night at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center at Morris. This annual event is Thursday July 27 and begins at 5 p.m. and runs until the bugs drive us out of the garden, usually around 9 p.m. People have been driving from as far away as Fargo, Brainerd and St Cloud to view the gardens and listen to the speakers.
The Twins have played 83 games so far this season, which is slightly over half of the regular season. They currently sit at 46-37, having just dropped two out of three to the lowly Kansas City Royals. The Royals should have swept the series, but gave away the first game to the Twins with some shoddy defense and a wild pitch late in the game. These losses brought the Twins' 11-game winning streak to an end. It was the third-best streak in team history.
