Is this another crazy year? Wheat fields starting to turn by July 4, corn fields that are chest high by the Fourth and gardens producing like gangbusters. I had a great crop of snow peas, the onions look like they are about mature size, the first picking of green beans were delicious, and the raspberries are ripening as fast as I can pick them. The flavor is excellent but the seeds still stick in my teeth. My freezer will be full of this season's fruit and vegetables in no time. I thought that my potatoes might not have potato beetles this year and then last week here they came.
15 Years Ago July 2, 1991 Sun City crews cut down 18 elms on boulevards in Morris between June 15 and 25 and marked another 14 diseased elms on private property. Public Works Director Bill Storck said Dutch Elm disease seems to be a little stronger this year. Specialist Lyle E. Kill, son of Fred and Helen Kill of Morris, recently returned home from serving in Operation Desert Storm. His regiment led the 7th Army Corps in its thrust into Iraq toward Basra.
"Summertime, and the livin' is easy", the song says. So, how about some easy freezer/refrigerator jams this week. The first one comes to me "third hand" from Liz Ascheman to Judy Riley, to me. Rhubarb Blueberry Jam 5 C. rhubarb 3/4 C. water Cook until soft. Add 2 cups blueberries and 3 cups sugar. Boil 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 pkg. (small) raspberry Jell-O. Stir and pour into containers. Freeze. Frozen Strawberry (or raspberry) Jam 4 C. crushed berries 3 1/2 oz powdered pectin (Sure-Jell) 1 C. white corn syrup 5 1/2 C. sugar Sift pectin over berries.
The City of Morris will be represented by Mayor Carol Wilcox and City Council member Sheldon Giese should a proposed annexation process reach the mediation phase. The council voted to approve the appointment of Wilcox and Giese, and to name City Manager Ed Larson an ex officio member of the mediation team, at its meeting Tuesday night. The council also may appoint a resident to the mediation team at a later date. Morris has made a request to the state to annex 165.5 acres of land now in Morris and Darnen townships. Candidates for most major offices representing Stevens County have filed for election. One exception as of Friday are Minnesota State Senate District 11 incumbent Dallas Sams, a Democrat from Staples. Sams said earlier this year that he would run again. Tuesday, July 28 is the deadline for county and school board office filings. The City of Morris filing period is Aug. 29 to Sept. 12. In Stevens County, District 5 Commissioner Bob Stevenson and District 2 Commissioner Herb Kloos filed for reelection on Thursday.
Ethan Brigh Koehler was born July 7, 2006 at Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, to Mike and Alethea Koehler of Morris. Ethan weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. and was 19" long. Grandparents are Alfred and Delores Koehler from Morris and Elliot and Sandra Nelson from Benson.
Callie Marie Koser was born July 7, 2006 at Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, to Darren and Nicole Koser from Herman. Callie Marie weighed 7 lbs. and was 18 1/2" long. Grandparents are Vern and Bernice Christie from Hancock and Rodney and Joan Koser from Herman. Great grandmother is Anna Mae Evink from Hancock.
There will be a baby shower for Haylee Anne Schmall, infant daughter of Grant and Sarah (Fahje) Schmall at the Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall in Alberta, on Saturday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.
