Seven athletes from Morris braved the 92-degree heat to participate in the state Hershey's Track and Field meet on July 8. The athletes qualified during the June 24 District Meet held in Morris. This year's Minnesota State Hershey Track meet was held at Sabre Field in Sartell. State field events In the girls field events, Abby Travis participated in the Standing Long Jump, placing 6th with a jump of 5-foot-10 and Justine Huebner placed 11th with a jump of 5-foot-6.5. Rebekah Aanerud placed second in the softball throw with a distance of 96-feet-5.
The second-annual David F. Day Memorial Scholarship Fishing Tournament is Saturday, July 22. A pre-tournament meeting is at 10 a.m. and the tournament runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a $25 entry fee before July 10 and a $35 fee the day of the event. Boat launches are on the Starbuck side of the lake with check-in at the Water's Edge, in Starbuck.

Ann Yunker, 89, of Brainerd, formerly of Crosby, died July 16, 2006 at the Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Funeral services will be 9:30 am on Friday, July 21 at the Bethany Good Samaritan Village Chapel, Brainerd. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Friends may call on Thursday, July 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Friends may also call a half hour prior to services at the Bethany Chapel. Ann Yunker was born on July 10, 1917, in Dawson, N.M. the daughter of Yugoslavian immigrants, John and Stefania Sepich.
There will be a baby shower for Haylee Anne Schmall, infant daughter of Grant and Sarah (Fahje) Schmall at the Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall in Alberta, on Saturday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome. An open house 30th wedding anniversary dance will be held for Craig and Marty Petersen on Saturday, July 22, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., at the Eagles club in Morris. An open house bridal shower in honor of Lisa Schmidt, bride to be of Mike Melchert, will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 2-5 p.m. at the Kongsvinger Parish Hall.

A recent study found that in the year 2004, Americans reported having 30 percent fewer close friends than they did in 1985. One-quarter of the population reported having no close friends at all. This increased "social isolation," as the professors call it, came as a complete surprise to the researchers who conducted the study. In fact, they had embarked on their study hoping to discredit the 1995 book Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Putnam took a look at bowling leagues, among other groups, and found that people just aren't getting together like they used to.
