Last week's headlines didn't look good for corn-based ethanol: -- "Food-crop biofuels given thumbs down." -- "Ethanol is sort of a drop in the bucket, scientists warn." -- "Study says ethanol not best alternative to oil." -- "Ethanol no 'silver bullet' for world's fuel problems.'" In many cases, ethanol supporters did not care for stories that went with the headlines around the world any better than they liked the headlines. email@example.com reported: "Producing biofuels such as ethanol from food crops isn't worth the effort." Grist Magazine's Web site added: "A new study casts serious d
A recent study found that in the year 2004, Americans reported having 30 percent fewer close friends than they did in 1985. One-quarter of the population reported having no close friends at all. This increased "social isolation," as the professors call it, came as a complete surprise to the researchers who conducted the study. In fact, they had embarked on their study hoping to discredit the 1995 book Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Putnam took a look at bowling leagues, among other groups, and found that people just aren't getting together like they used to.
Isn't it funny how one name can send you so far down memory lane that you almost have to take a vacation day just to find your way back? I was reading an obituary in my hometown newspaper and it hit me like a sunbeam following a downpour: Wattenhoffer. The landlord for my parents' first house in Park Rapids was a Wattenhoffer. Huh. Don't worry if you can't pronounce it. They're not from around these parts. But that one name reminded me of so much more, starting with Tiny's Meats, the butcher shop that Tiny Wattenhoffer had in Two Inlets.
Tim Grove said he doesn't expect any sibling rivalry to surface when the time comes to begin scheduling basketball practices with his brother Paul, the University of Minnesota, Morris' head men's basketball coach. It'll be a friendly family affair in the UMM basketball offices, Tim Grove said with a laugh. Grove has been named UMM's interim head women's basketball coach, said UMM Athletic Director Mark Fohl. Grove replaces Cougar women's basketball head coach Randi Peterson.
One of the simple pleasures of summer is the blinking of fireflies on a warm summer night. It evokes memories of camping, childhood, sultry nights, and canning jar lanterns. All of this summer magic is thanks to a peculiar group of insects known as fireflies or lightening bugs. These insects have a remarkable ability to harness light for their own use. Most fireflies belong to a family of insects called Lampyridae. They are not really flies at all but rather a form of beetle. Most fireflies use their ability to create flashes of light to attract a mate.
