The Morris 13U baseball team ran its record to 20-0 by winning the Apple River Classic in Somerset, WI last weekend, July 22-23. Morris went 4-0 in the Class A/AAA division tournament. Morris usually plays in the Class B/AA division so this was a step up in competition for the team. Morris 9 - Menomonie 3 Morris defeated Menomonie, WI 9-3 in their first game on Saturday. Travis Rinkenberger picked up the win on the mound for Morris, pitching the first five innings.
The Morris VFW baseball team defeated Ortonville Thursday evening, 16-5, to stay alive in District 5 playoff action in Willmar. Luke Claassen was on the mound for five innings and faced 28 batters. He gave up five hits, five runs (only one earned), walked seven, and struck out eight. Coach T. J. Voges said everybody contributed to the win over Ortonville. Dustin Sauter had two runs and two stolen bases. Darrick Henrichs was 1-3 with three runs. Matt Wohlers was 2-2 and had a triple and a run. Ryan Snyder was also 2-2 with one run. Kirby Sayles had two runs.

Amanda Murphy was as surprised as anyone when she heard the emcee call her name as the new Miss Midwest "I don't even know what I was thinking at that point," Murphy said. Murphy is a junior at the University of Minnesota, Morris, majoring in Economics and Management. She is originally from Glencoe, but shortly after she graduated from high school, her parents moved to Missouri.
By Eric Ebert West Central Tribune ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of a former Starbuck police officer in an opinion filed Tuesday. Scott Bruce Mogler, 33, of Starbuck was found guilty in Pope County District Court in February 2005 on two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, after having sex twice in 2004 with a 17-year-old girl while he was on duty. Mogler appealed the conviction, citing the law he was convicted under was unconstitutionally vague.

Respect request regarding carillon Over the past few weeks, I've been reading a few letters to the editor regarding the electronic carillon bells at the cemetery. I felt that the first letter, asking that the volume be turned down and the electronic carillon not play so late, had a well stated argument from a nearby resident who found the sound intrusive.
