By Don Davis Forum Communications ST. PAUL - Minnesota's governor wants federal officials to declare 36 counties drought disaster areas and asked state agencies to take other steps to help farmers affected by record dry weather. If the U.S. Department of Agriculture grants Gov. Tim Pawlenty's request, farmers and ranchers will be eligible for low-interest loans for drought-related expenses. Even with recent rains in part of the state, much of northwest, central and east-central Minnesota remains dry.
Submitted by the Stevens Community Humane Society Slim isn't talking much about the experiences that defined the last few month of his life, but he's definitely happy to have a safe place to be, and regular meals to eat. Slim, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, wandered into a yard a few miles west of Morris. The homeowners, noting the dog's obvious limp, dirty coat and emaciated condition, contacted authorities who connected them with the Stevens Community Humane Society. Volunteer Karon White, who was on duty the day Slim came in, immediately contacted Dr.
Get behind Morris, we're on the move!...What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!...Rah! Rah! Rochester...Cleveland rocks! You've heard the slogans, in Morris and elsewhere. Every city, large or small, trying to promote its best with a catchy slogan and an eye-catching "brand" or logo. The Communications and Marketing Committee - a new committee of the Morris Area Chamber of Commerce - will soon invite all Morris residents to submit an idea for a new logo for the Chamber.
Scores of school children have learned a lot during visits to the Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab over the years. Soon, again thanks to those involved in SWELL, more kids will learn that dreams don't die, even after a devastating fire. Karl and Linda Retzlaff, contractor Mark Estenson and several volunteers have spent the last two weeks rebuilding the SWELL classroom building that burned early last fall. "We asked teachers and other community people if they wanted to rebuild it," said Linda Retzlaff. "Overwhelmingly, they wanted to rebuild.
Editor's note -- Not long ago, few Minnesotans could name the state's Auditor or Attorney General. Now, candidates for both offices are high-profile given recent -- and possibly future -- events.

Sister's Day is Sunday, Aug. 6, and these are the times when you are really, really happy you write a newspaper column and your sisters don't (that sound you don't hear is me rubbing my hands together very gleefully -- OK, where to start this rip job ... ). Seriously, I have very little bad to say about my sisters, even though they outnumber me 4-to-1. And it's Sister's Day, which kind of implies that you're supposed to be nice to them. My oldest sister, Deb, is a gifted education teacher and a school counselor. She's about 10 years older than I (which makes her, what, 35 now?
The dog days of summer are now here. The non-waiver trading deadline has passed in Major League Baseball (as usual, the Twins did nothing except dump Kyle Lohse's contract). Early August also means that NFL training camps are getting started. The Vikings are back in Mankato, practicing in the 100 degree heat. Camp opened for rookies on July 27, and the veterans came in on July 30. New coach Brad Childress opened camp with a conditioning test for all the players.

As a man I'll never gain the wisdom Sharon Olds expresses in this poem about motherhood, but one of the reasons poetry is essential is that it can take us so far into someone else's experience that we feel it's our own. My Son the Man Suddenly his shoulders get a lot wider, the way Houdini would expand his body while people were putting him in chains. It seems no time since I would help him to put on his sleeper, guide his calves into the gold interior, zip him up and toss him up and catch his weight.
