SPICER, Minn. — U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson said he has co-sponsored a bill to allow foreign agricultural workers to work legally in this country. However, the bill has not had a hearing in 15 years, he said at a town hall Saturday. State Rep. Dave Baker, R-Willmar, and state Sen. Andrew Lang, R-Olivia, joined Peterson in the 90-minute meeting. About 50 people attended the meeting at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center in rural Spicer. The town hall started at the close of the center's Earth Day event.
WILLMAR, Minn. — Gov. Mark Dayton's proposal to help children and families involves a multi-agency effort to address underlying reasons for the achievement gap in Minnesota's schools. In a conference call with rural Minnesota reporters Wednesday, Dayton and some of his commissioners outlined a plan to address a variety of needs for struggling families. The proposal is part of the governor's budget proposal which will be reviewed and most likely changed by the Legislature before adjournment in May.
WILLMAR — When he works on the federal 2018 Farm Bill, U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway says he will be thinking about moms on food stamps and how changes in farm policy will affect their food costs. Conaway, R-Texas, chairman of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, visited Minnesota late last week. One of his stops was at Hultgren Farms in rural Raymond, just west of Willmar Saturday afternoon. Conaway said he looks forward to working with U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., the ranking minority member on the committee on the next Farm Bill.

WILLMAR -- Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar's legislation to protect seniors from neglect or abuse by court-appointed guardians passed the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday. The Guardian Accountability and Senior Protection Act would help states improve their oversight of guardians and conservators of seniors and vulnerable adults. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, cosponsored the bill with Klobuchar, a Democrat.
