Andrew Hagen, 64, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Tuesday morning, March 18, 2008 in the Palliative Care Unit at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Andy was a driver for Detroit Lakes Newspapers, on the Ogema carrier route. He is survived by two sons, Alan and Adam Hagen, and one daughter, Carrie Hagen, all of Jamestown, N.D.; and his companion of 14 years, Judy Omundson of Detroit Lakes. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Etta R. Fichtner, 88, of Frazee, died Friday March 14, 2008 at the Frazee Care Center in Frazee. Etta is survived by one son; Richard (Jackie) Fichtner, of Emerado, N.D., and one daughter; Deanna Aires, of Alder Point, Calif.; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Holmes United Methodist Church Cemetery in rural Reynolds, N.D. The West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes ( www.westkjos.com ) is handling the arrangements.
Feb. 14, 1935-March 18, 2008 Waldimir T. "Ted" Nameniuk, 73, of Lake Park, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park. Ted was born to Matt and Josephine Nameniuk on Feb. 14, 1935 in Billings County, N.D. He attended school in Belfield, N.D., graduating with honors and lettering in basketball and football. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained in electronics repair.
Aug. 14, 1918-March 14, 2008 Elizabeth M. Nybo, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Elizabeth May Vogt was born to John and Julia (Lind) Vogt on Aug. 14, 1918 in Detroit Lakes, where she was raised and educated. Elizabeth graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1936. She married Arne Nybo on Aug. 26, 1940 in Detroit Lakes. They lived in St. Paul and then Spokane, Wash., prior to returning to Detroit Lakes in 1946. After raising their children, Elizabeth worked for Lindrud's Dime Store and the Holland Motel.
Feb. 6, 1932-March 15, 2008 Former Audubon resident George Hamre, 82, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday March 15, 2008, surrounded by his family. Edward George Hamre was born to Carl and Ora (Engum) Hamre on April 28, 1925 in Atlanta Township, rural Lake Park, where he grew up and attended country school before graduating from Lake Park High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Army during World War II. He returned home and attended Agriculture College in Detroit Lakes. On Oct. 22, 1949 George married Donna Sayler in Atlanta Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park.
May 20, 1934-March 13, 2008 Marian B. Berg, 73, a longtime resident of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, after a lengthy illness, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Marian Barbara Illg was born to Hugo and Laura (Mischke) Illg of Evergreen Township, Becker County on May 20, 1934. She attended country school and graduated from Frazee High School in 1952. She then attended Detroit Lakes Business College, graduating in 1953, and did office work at Swifts and Blandings. Marian married Donald Berg on July 31, 1954.
Feb. 6, 1932-March 11, 2008 Garfield E. Branby, 76, of Frazee, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Triumph Hospital in Fargo. Garfield Ernest Branby was born to Gerhard and Esther (Helland) Branby on Feb. 6, 1932, in Glenwood, Minn. He grew up in Glenwood, graduating from high school in 1950. While in Glenwood, Garfield worked for the fisheries hatchery. He entered the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, leaving with an honorable discharge. On July 7, 1956, Garfield married Cydera Illg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Evergreen, Frazee.
Dec. 17, 1935-March 14, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Jean Fingalson, 72, of Moorhead, died Friday, March 14, 2008, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Jean Ann Marie Fingalson was born the daughter of Glenn C. and Dorothea G. Fingalson on Dec. 17, 1935, in Detroit Lakes. Jean attended Detroit Lakes High School and graduated in 1954. During her high school years she was active in 4-H, Luther League, Sunday school, and also taught Vacation Bible School at Richwood Lutheran Church.
Nov. 7, 1931-March 14, 2008 Kenneth V. Skoog, 76, of Wolf Lake, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, March 14, 2008. Kenneth Virgil Skoog was born to Olaf and Saima (Hillukka) Skoog on Nov. 7, 1931 in Wolf Lake Township. Kenny married Judith Erickson on Oct. 13, 1956 in Detroit, Mich. They made their home in the Wolf Lake area. Thirteen children were born to this union. Kenny was a member of the Laestadian Lutheran Church of Menahga. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends. His home was open to all. Kenny spent most of his life trucking and farming.
Sept. 23, 1930-March 11, 2008 Lois C. Grindland, 77, of Willmar, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at her home. Lois Constance Johnshoy was born to Rev. Joseph and Helga (Larsen) Johnshoy on Sept. 23, 1930, in Moorhead, the youngest of nine children. She grew up in the Moorhead community, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1948. She then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating in 1952 with a degree in music. As a student, she sang in the Concordia Choir and was the honored "Beautiful Savior" soloist.
