Eric Riley threw a two-hitter for his second consecutive shutout and Tyler Hansen and Ryan Beyer each drove in two runs as Morris VFW Post 5039 opened District 5 tournament play with a 6-0 win over Montevideo on Tuesday, July 21 at Chizek Field.

The double elimination tournament now goes to Benson from Friday through Monday with Morris taking on Madison in a winner's bracket game on Friday night.

Post 5039's pitching is coming on at the right time as they have allowed just one run in their last 26 innings of play.

Morris took an early lead as they scored two runs in each of the first two innings on Tuesday.

Alex Erickson led off the bottom of the first with a single and he promptly stole second and scored on a Hansen single to right field. Hansen also stole second and came around to score when Montevideo committed a two-out error.

In the second inning, Mitch Kill and Ethan Bruer reached on consecutive one-out singles. After a walk to Erickson loaded the bases, Hansen drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Bruer scored when Erickson got in a rundown on a pick-off play at first.

Post 5039 tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bruer and Erickson singled with one out, Hansen walked to load the bases, and two runs scored on a Beyer single to left field.

Riley then shut the door in the top of the seventh to close out the win as Morris improved to a record of 14-4 on the year.
