Tiger gymnasts compete at Section 6A meet

The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta gymnastics team traveled to Willmar on Saturday, Feb. 16, for the Section 6A Gymnastics Meet.

There are nine teams in attendance: Alexandria Cardinals, Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Braves, Litchfield Dragons, Melrose Area Dutchmen, New London-Spicer Wildcats, Ortonville/Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Trojans, Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins Bulldogs, Willmar Cardinals, and the Tigers.

“The Section 6A Gymnastics Meet is the ‘big meet’ of the season,” explained coach Trent Oberg. “At stake are individual and team advancements to the state gymnastics meet.  The top team in the section moves on to the state meet as well as the first four individuals at each event.

“Judging and scoring tend to be more demanding,” added Oberg.  “With nine teams to compete, it is a long day.

“After having their best meet of the season at the West Central Conference Meet the previous week, the Lady Tigers were full of excitement,” said Oberg.

The previous Saturday numerous personal-best scores were recorded, as well as three new event total season highs, and a new season-high team total.

“It was not meant to be,” commented Oberg. “We had a rough day and struggled right from the start."

The Tigers finished eighth with a team score of 115.03.

“Our first event was the balance beam.  We fell off the beam several times and could not recover.  It seemed to follow us to the other events as the day progressed.

“Savannah Aanerud had a nice bar routine.  She has been working hard on some new tricks and cleaning up her form.  Her efforts paid off.  She set a new personal-best score of 6.825, a jump of 1.225.”

Melrose Area was crowned the Section Team Champion and advances to the state meet.  They have a chance to repeat as Class A State Gymnastics Team Champions.

The Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Coaches Association sponsors the Team Academic Award.  Each team must use 60 percent of their entire roster, grades 7 – 12, to determine their average GPA.  A Team receives Silver Status if their GPA is between 3.5 and 3.749.  Teams that average between 3.75 and 4.0 receive Gold Status.  In Section 6A, all nine teams received Academic Awards this past season.

Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta had the second highest GPA in the section and received a Gold Status for their average GPA of 3.872 for 21 girls.
