Tigers advance in OT
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta advanced past West Central Area 63-59 in overtime in a Section 6AA-West boys' basketball semifinal Saturday at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
Next up for the Tigers will be Staples-Motley in the 6AA-West title game at 8 p.m. Tuesday at UMM. Staples-Motley advanced with a 49-37 win over Breckenridge in Saturday's other sub-section semifinal at UMM.
The No. 1 seed Tigers came from behind to send the game into overtime with the No. 5 Knights, who were coming off a mild upset over Minnewaska Area.
The Tigers made only eight of 18 from the charity stripe in regulation, but made the free-throw shots when they had to. Lincoln Arnold's one shot with 9.6 seconds remaining sent the game to an extra four minutes. In overtime, the Tigers converted eight of 14 to seal the victory.
The Tigers got behind early, making just two of their first nine shots to give the Knights a 10-4 lead.
Seven minutes into the game, the shots began falling when Jackson Henrich started an 11-2 run to give the Tigers their first lead at 16-15.
The teams battled back and forth for the rest of the game, with neither gaining more than a seven-point lead. The Tigers went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 41 with 6:08 left in regulation, but the Knights regained the lead. Trailing for the last four minutes, the Tigers and Knights traded baskets until the last seconds, when Arnold snared an offensive rebound and was fouled by WCA's Bryce Olson. Lincoln made the first shot to tie the game.
The Tigers scored first in overtime with Alex Erickson draining a three-pointer, but Sam Richards of the Knights came back with a three-point play to tie the game.
Arnold answered with a basket and then made two free throws for a four-point lead.
The Tiger advantage increased to six points after Cory Hennen made two free throws.
Knight Beau Kashmark made a junk basket with a few seconds left for the final score.
Arnold finished with a team-high 18 points before fouling out in overtime. Hennen added 15 points. Arnold and Henrich grabbed 10 rebounds apiece.
Richards scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for West Central Area. Kashmark followed with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Logan Pfingsten added 10 points.
