Tiger gymnasts get ready for conference meet

The Morris Area gymnasts attended their final regular-season dual meet at Frazee-Vergas Thursday, Jan, 28. After a very close match, the varsity Tigers lost 106.95-104.2. The junior varsity team won 73.85-27.7.

This Saturday, Feb. 13, the Tigers travel to the West Central Conference meet in Paynesville and will be competing against five other teams: Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins, Benson - KMS, Melrose Area, New London-Spicer, and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

Announcements of the All Conference Team and Honorable Mentions will be made.

Then on Saturday, Feb. 20, the Section 6A meet will be held in New London. The Tigers will compete against eight other teams: Paynesville/EV-W, Ortonville, Willmar, New London-Spicer, Melrose Area, Benson-KMS, Litchfield, and Sartell-St. Stephen. This is the State Meet qualifier with the top team moving on to state along with the top four individuals in each event. Section 6 has four of the top fourteen teams from Class A in the state.

"We had been gearing up for this meet," said coach Trent Oberg. "The energy, excitement, and anticipation were high."

The Tigers knew it would be a close competition because Frazee-Vergas has been posting scores very similar to Morris Area's. They are rebuilding their program and have a smaller squad.

"I was returning to familiar territory,"explained Oberg. "When I first started coaching, we would compete in an invitational hosted by the Hornets. Their program dissolved when Perham decided to become an independent team. The Frazee program started up again a few years ago.

"Going into the meet I was feeling confident," he said. "The line-ups at both levels were set where I was hoping for (less Paige Schieler with a foot injury).

"However, during warm-ups, varsity all-arounder Cammi Aanerud rolled her ankle and it swelled up to the size of a grapefruit," Oberg said. "We pulled her out of competition and scrambled to fill in her spots - which changed the line-ups at both levels.

"It was chaotic for a few moments - changing who was competing and at what level," added Oberg.

"Every Gymnast (varsity and junior varsity) had to step it up, filling in spots and changing order.

"We were very impressed with the girls' flexibility," Oberg said of the coaching staff. "They realized that we had to adjust and they fell into the groove almost as if nothing had happened.

"Even with the last minute adjustments, the Tiger gymnasts posted very respectable scores at varsity and junior varsity," said Oberg. "It was fun to watch the girls giving it there best. Those that had to move up, did not seem phased by the changes. The depth of the team is very good.

"The varsity balance beam was probably the highlight of the evening," said Oberg. "There were four stuck beam routines. Amanda Moser, Hailey Kotts, Jessica Daly, and Rachel Moser all had stuck beam routines.

"I am not sure when the last time was that we have had that solid of a beam set. It has been at least five years."
