Tiger girls sweep Bulldogs

After a 10-day break, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls' basketball teams swept Paynesville Area Friday night at home.

The varsity Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 67-46 for their second West Central Conference South win of the season.

Jenna Nelson set a MA/C-A individual record in one game with 10 assists - breaking her previous record of nine which she held with Ashley Dohlen.

The Tigers had four players record double-doubles. Mary Rentz had 19 points and 10 rebounds; Nicole Gillespie recorded 14 points and 14 rebounds; and Erin Schieler had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kelsey Greenwaldt added 10 points, Nelson chipped in nine, and Shadow Olson had five.

"After a long 10-day break the girls really played some solid basketball," said coach Ken Gagner. "Our offensive rebounding was the difference in the first half, as despite not shooting great, we had plenty of opportunities for put backs.

"Once again, I thought we did a good job of pushing the ball and the ladies did not give up many easy baskets defensively.

The Bulldogs stayed outside, putting up 25 three-pointers and making nine. Andrea Schlangen hit four to finish with 14 points.

"Paynesville has a lot of young players and they were throwing threes up left and right," said Gagner. "Fortunately for us, as I said earlier, we converted on a lot of second chances and added transition baskets to keep a comfortable margin for most of the game."

Milbank will be a big test for the Tigers on Tuesday night, followed by a trip to conference foe Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday.
