MAHS boys No. 7, Owls girls No. 10 in hoops rankings

The Morris Area boys basketball team had a fine season in 2008-2009, and its clear high school basketball experts expect something similar from the Tigers in 2009-2010.

Morris Area is ranked No. 7 in the Minnesota Basketball News in Class AA. The Tigers finished 23-5 last season, losing to 2007-2008 state champion New London-Spicer in the Section 6AA title game last spring.

The New London-Spicer boys team is ranked No. 2 in Class AA this year behind No. 1 Plainview/Elgin-Millville.

The Tigers boys team opens its season Friday, Dec. 4, at Osakis.

The Hancock Owls girls basketball team is ranked No. 10 in Minnesota Basketball News' Class A poll, while the New London-Spicer girls team is ranked No. 2 in Class AA behind Minneapolis Roosevelt.

Last year, the Tigers, New London-Spicer and Montevideo represented the West Central Conference well in the postseason. Montevideo knocked off undefeated MACCRAY on its way to the Section 3AA championship. This year, MACCRAY is ranked No. 1 in Class A.

Last year, the Tigers and New London-Spicer split two regular-season games, with Morris Area defeating New London-Spicer 56-53 in Morris. The Wildcats downed the Tigers in a matchup of the West Central South and North champions, 76-64.

Other regional boys teams ranked include Willmar, which is No. 6 in Class AAA.
