No. 2 seed Tigers to host first round of volleyball playoffs

Erin Schieler dominated the net and Mackenzie Weatherly shined at the service line as Morris Area finished the West Central Conference South season in second place by defeating Yellow Medicine East 19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 Friday. The last time the two teams met in Morris on Sept. 17 the Tigers also won a 3-1 match.

The Tigers finish the regular season 10-2 in the conference and 17-6 overall, trailing conference champion Benson for the crown. Benson finished the loop with a perfect 13-0 record.

With the wrapping up of the regular season Friday, section 3AA brackets were finalized. The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed in the North and will host No. 7 Minnewaska Friday at 6 p.m.

The Tigers and the Lakers split regular-season matches, with both teams winning on their home courts.

Morris Area also hosts the match between No. 3 Yellow Medicine East and No. 6 Montevideo Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Benson is the No. 1 seed in Section 3AA North and hosts No. 8 Lac qui Parle Valley Friday. That match will be followed by the No. 4 BOLD versus No. 5 Redwood Valley contest.

The second round of the playoffs will be held Monday, Nov. 2 at Montevideo with the location of the third round on Nov. 5 still to be decided.

The Section 3AA North Championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 at Southwest Minnesota State University.

On Friday, Schieler pounded down 24 kills in 41 attacks to spark Morris. She also had three ace blocks.

Weatherly served six aces in 23-of-24 attempts, and also chalked up 17 assists for the Tigers. Dani Schultz followed with 16 assists, Jenna Nelson added 12 kills and Brooke Anderson had 29 digs.

The Sting were led by Emily Baker with 14 kills, four ace blocks and 17 digs. Aimee Johnson added 12 kills and served three aces, Courtney Hinz had 35 assists and Mariah Skjefte had 14 digs.
