Tigers recover from tough losses

Morris Area faced two of the toughest volleyball opponents thus far, falling to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Benson on the road earlier this week, but bounced back to defeat Montevideo at home Thursday.

Going into Monday's game, the Jaguars were ranked 10th in Class A and were undefeated in the Central Minnesota Conference. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa handed the Tigers a 25-8, 25-20, 25-20 loss in non-conference action.

Jenna Nelson and Erin Schieler recorded seven kills each for Morris. Brooke Anderson served three aces and had 28 digs. Mackenzie Weatherly contributed 11 assists.

Rachel Anderson hit 11 kills and had three ace blocks to help B-B-E control the net. She also had two ace serves, along with Anna Marthaler. Maggie Gruber posted 10 kills and Shannon Gruber added nine. Raeann Sorenson had 14 digs. Julie Hieserich had 39 assists.

Benson 3

Fans in Benson Tuesday night were torn between the action on the Braves' court and the drama on the television broadcasting the Twins versus Tigers game.

In the end, both Tiger teams wnet home with losses.

Morris Area had a chance to tie Benson for the conference lead, but the Braves' prevailed 25-19, 25-20, 27-25 to stay undefeated in the West Central Conference South.

Nelson led Morris with 10 kills and Schieler had eight. Carrie Roske had 25 digs.

Kayla Hampton had 11 kills and Emily Auch 10 for Benson. Taylor Semler was credited with 23 assists and also had three kills, two ace serves and 15 digs. Auch led with 18 digs.

Montevideo 2

Nelson pounded down 29 kills in 72 attacks to help the Tigers hold off Montevideo 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7 in a conference volleyball match Thursday in Morris.

Morris Area improved to 8-2 in the West Central South and 15-6 overall.

Montevideo fell to 4-5 in the conference and 13-6 overall.

Nelson had only four hitting errors and finished with a .347 kill percentage. Schieler had 15 kills and a .316 kill percentage. Dani Schultz had 21 assists and Mackenzie Weatherly added 17.

Montevideo was led by Beka Schwendemann with 21 kills and four ace blocks. Brooke Tastad added 17 kills. Carly Beals amassed 31 assists.
