Tigers go extra innings to advance

Fairmont 11, Morris/C-A 2

Fairmont returned to a game suspended by rain on Tuesday with an offensive outburst that all but sealed up a Section 3AA victory over the Tigers on Wednesday.

The game was suspended with Fairmont batting in the bottom of the second inning. In the third, Fairmont scored six runs and pitcher Clayton Maakestad allowed just an unearned run over the final five innings.

Bryce Jergenson, Gage Backman, Riley Biesterfeld and Corey Storck — who tripled in a run — had the Tigers’ four hits.

Bryce Jergenson’s no-out single in the bottom of the eighth at Legion Field drove home Joey Dufault with the tying run and Nathan Anderson with the game-ender as the Morris/Chokio-Alberta Tigers shaded St. James 7-6 on Thursday.

Jergenson, a senior, also pitched all eight innings for the win, striking out eight batters.

The Tigers needed a dramatic two-out double by Corey Storck to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

St. James scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to go in front 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, a hit batter with the bases soaked made it 6-5, setting the stage for Jergenson’s decider.

Riley Biesterfield’s homer in the fifth was the Tigers’ first run. Morris/CA outhit St. James 10 to 6.

The win put the Tigers in the final four against host Marshall on Saturday; Luverne and Fairmont play are in the winners’ bracket final.
