The Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta Tiger softball team trifled the Minnewaska Lakers in five innings on Thursday, May 1.

The Lakers were 5-4 and on a four-game losing streak coming into the contest Thursday night at Wells Park in Morris. Lakers were supposedly one of the tougher competitors in the West Central Conference, but are battling a possible low self esteem from a now five-game losing streak. The Tigers took the game 15-5 in five innings.

The Lakers got on the board first, getting two across the plate in the top half of the first inning. That lead didn’t last long as the Tigers put up three in the bottom half of the inning. Becca Holland led off with a double to center field, followed by a single by Chelsey Ehleringer who took second on a pass ball. Then Lauren Reimers hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to set the tone for the Tigers, taking their first lead of the evening 3-2.

The Lakers tied it up with a run in the second, took the lead in the third and got an insurance run in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead– what would be their biggest lead of the evening.

The Tigers erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning on eight base hits, most of which two come after the two out mark, to put the game on ice. Seven Tigers had RBI in the inning.

The Lakers couldn’t get any marks back in the top of the fifth to close the gap, but a two-run single by Nicole Strobel finished off the Lakers in the bottom half of the inning to end the game by the 10-run rule at 15-5.

Strobel was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and Holland was 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

Reimers had two hits and four RBIs.

Freshman Brooke Gillespie earned the win, working all five innings.

The Tigers play Melrose at 4:30 p.m. today in Morris.
