The Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta girls track and field program ran its way to second place at the hosted Marv Meyer Invite on Tuesday afternoon.

Head coach Mark Ekren and the girls track program graduated six seniors from the squad last season, including two state runners MaKenzie Smith (1600m, 3200m) and Katie Holzheimer (100m). In the 2012-2013 season, the girls were West Central Conference champions and took home the subsection title for the second year in a row. The Tiger girls also placed second at True Team for the third straight year, and Ekren has no doubts that the girls will be in the running again this year.

“We’ll be competitive, again, this year,” Ekren said. “We lost a lot of good talent last season, but we still have a lot here in the program and coming up.”

The Tigers hit the track for the first time for the Marv Meyer Invitational in Morris. The girls finished second behind Osakis who took first with 154 points.

“Our hurdles are looking strong, we have some new distance runners this year to go with our returning distance crew. We have our sprinters back. We’re excited," Ekren said. "We have a lot of depth. We just have to stay healthy that’s the big thing, just like any sport. If we can stay healthy, we’ll be okay.”

For 100m hurdles, Rebekah Aanerud finished second in 18.11 and led the Tiger pack of four who all finished top five.

Freshman Katie Folkman took second in both the 100m and 200m dash.

Freshman Correy Hickman finished in second during the 400m dash with a time of 1:06.12.

Both the MA/C-A 4x2 (Paige Schieler, Beth Holland, Adrianela Mendez, Correy Hickman) and 4x4 relays finished second behind first placers from Osakis.

For field events, Moira McNally took second in disc, Grove took second in long jump, and Abby Travis cleared the bar at 7-06.00 for first place in pole vault.

The Tigers will hit the track in Lac qui Parle Valley on Friday, April 11.
