No bouquet of flowers for the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers on Friday, Feb. 14, but the Melrose Dutchmen did hand them their 11th conference win this season with a 62-42 final score. The Tigers ran out of momentum that propelled them to a season high seven-game winning streak and took a loss to Breckenridge on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The Tigers stifled Melrose to come up with a win at home on Friday night. In a previous meeting, the Tigers nearly edged out a 56-51 victory in Melrose in mid Dec.

“Yeah, we had a little different outcome [Friday night] compared to last time,” head coach Dale Henrich. “Last time we just didn’t play that well,” Henrich said. “We had a girl that was out sick, and we had her start tonight, so that really helped.”

Despite the inevitable slow Tiger start to the first half, the Tigers managed to pull ahead for good beyond the first nine minute mark.

“I don’t think we’re ever going to get rid of that [slow start],” Henrich commented. “I think it’s just how we get a feel for the other team, so we know where to make adjustments. We’ve been doing really well at making those necessary adjustments in game and making our opponents play our game.”

The Tigers win came behind double-digit scoring from Beth Holland, Becca Holland and Abbie Olson.

Beth Holland’s 13 points were a team-high, Becca added 12 and Olson 10, while Kaitlin Vogel nabbed eight rebounds and scored six points, and Lauren Reimers had five points and six assists.

The B-squad Tigers improved to 20-1 with yet another win over the Melrose Dutchmen. Coach Jim Greenwaldt commented that it was the good defense and impressive 46 rebounds that won the game. The B-squad Tigers took 67 shots, picking up a 49-24 win over Melrose.

Breckenridge 65, Morris/C-A 60 The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls basketball team ran out of momentum in the second half, allowing Breckenridge to rally from a 14-point halftime deficit on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Morris.

The Tigers led 29-15 at the break, but Breckenridge handled the Tiger press and rolled up 50 points out of the break to take the win from the Tigers 65-60.

Beth Holland led the Tigers with 17 points, Becca Holland had 16 and Abbie Olson finished with 13.

The Tigers had a seven-game winning streak snapped as they had won 11 of their last 12 games before falling to the Cowgirls.

The B-squadders picked up the 21st win of the year over a pressuring Breckenridge B-squad team. Though the scoreboard doesn't show a close game, the Tigers really had to buck up and play strong to defeat Breckenridge says coach Greenwaldt.

MA/C-A plays host to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and the Section 6AA-South No. 1 seeded Wildcats of New London-Spicer on Thursday, Feb. 20. The Tigers will finish up their regular season in Sauk Centre for a conference rematch against the Mainstreeters, hoping to vindicate a 64-49 loss to the Streeters earlier this season.
